MRAI asks of import duty removal on non-ferrous scrap
·
Material
Recycling Association of India (MRAI) has requested the government to remove
the duty on non ferrous scrap import in line with abolition of duty on ferrous
scrap to promote decarbonisation of the steel sector.
·
“Government
of India is walking the talking with its promises made to the recycling trade
and industry. For example, the removal of import duty on ferrous scrap by the
Steel Ministry. MRAI is now requesting the Steel Minister, Additional Secretary
and Niti Aayog that it is high time that we should take away the import duty on
non-ferrous scrap as well, While on the one hand many countries are restricting
export of scrap and protecting it for their own use, on the other hand, we
charge a duty for import of Non ferrous scrap to Bharat irrespective of the
fact that Bharat is highly dependent on scrap imports without which our
recycling trade and industry cannot survive. For example, 90% of aluminium
scrap used in Bharat is imported, while more than 50% of copper scrap and brass
scrap, 50% of lead scrap, stainless scrap and zinc scrap are imported.” MRAI
President Sanjay Mehta said while addressing the 11th IMRC conference and
expo being organised in Kolkata by Material Recycling Association of India
(MRAI).

While
on the one hand, many countries are restricting export of scrap and protecting
it for their own use, on the other hand, India is charging duty for import of
non ferrous scrap even though India is highly dependent on scrap imports
without which our recycling trade and industry cannot survive, Mehta pointed
out.
