Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN) is optimistic about potential changes in the steel import quota under Section 232 rules in the United States, with Brazil preparing to discuss the quota in January.
The Brazilian steelmaker believes tinplate may be one of the products for which the US may authorize larger volumes to be imported without the 25% tariff. CSN is also keener on requesting an exemption or quota increase for tinplate.
“Some sectors are demanding more production than [is] currently available in the US, and tinplate is one where production isn’t sufficient,” commercial director Luis Martinez said in an investor presentation on Wednesday December 8. “They have to import around half of their needs.”
“There is a chance the quota will be reviewed in January,” the executive said.
