A major expansion programme at British Steel's Skinningrove plant has taken a big step forward.The steelmaker is investing £26m in the site, its largest investment in its special profiles business for more than 30 years.Now, architectural firm Building Design Northern (BDN Ltd) has been appointed to bring the new processing facilities to life.The large-scale scheme will generate work for contractors in sectors from construction to "turning and milling expertise and automated warehousing companies".
British Steel has seen "strong growth" for its products in recent months, particularly those used in the mining and construction sectors.
It first announced its plans for the Skinningrove site, which employs hundreds, in August.
The new built-to-spec service centre will see the company bring products for the forklift industry to market.The Skinningrove facility will replace the services currently offered at the company’s site in Darlington, which stores and cuts profiles to customer requirements.
British Steel says it intends to offer "all employees currently based at Darlington new roles so we can retain and support our skilled workforce".
