A reaction in a melt shop furnace at AK Steel Works in Butler County this afternoon sent an employee to a Pittsburgh area hospital with non life-threatening injuries, a spokeswoman said.
Lisa Jester, a spokeswoman for AK Steel said the employee was taken to UPMC Mercy for treatment of burns. A second employee was treated on site for minor injuries.
The site has been secured and all employees have been accounted for, Ms. Jester said.
The cause of the incident is being investigated by AK Steel.
According to AK Steel’s website, the Butler Works, which is housed in 3.5 million-square-feet of space, is responsible for electrical and stainless steel melting and casting, hot and cold rolling, and finishing operations.
