Tata Steel will soon become 10 million ton flat product maker with the initiation of production in its flagship 3-million ton project at Kalinganagar, T V Narendran, Managing Director, India & South East Asia, Tata Steel, said on March 17.
Currently, Tata Steel produces 7 million tons of flat products in its Jamshedpur plant. With the commencement of production at Kalinganagar, the company would reach a flat products capacity of 10 million tons in India, Narendran said on the sidelines of the Annual Regional Meeting & Conference on “Building East, Driving Development” organised by CII in Kolkata.
The company currently produces around 3 million tons of long products at its Jamshedpur plant. “We produce around 3 million ton of long product at our plant in south east Asia which can be brought to India in case there is demand,” he said.
The company imported around 200,000 tons of long products to India from its south east Asian plant last year, Narendran said.
Tata Steel is currently focusing on commencement of integrated production in Kalinganagar and there are no plans for looking into the second phase of capacity expansion at Kalinganagar at the current moment. “We will look at stabilising production at Kalinganagar, look at demand position and cash flows before deciding on the second phase of Kalinganagar,” he added.
