Talks are under way to try to save jobs at the Redcar steel plant.
The site’s Thai owners, SSI, announced 1,700 redundancies this week as a result of the decision to mothball the plant.
Another 4,000 contractors and workers in the supply chain also face losing their jobs.
Unions are consulting over the redundancies, and the Government, which has been accused of failing to protect Britain’s industrial heritage and lumbering the sector with burdensome green costs, has vowed to help.
A ‘steel summit’ involving the industry, unions and ministers from Westminster, Wales and Scotland, will take place next month.
Business minister Anna Soubry said: ‘I hope SSI’s announce-ment they are mothballing the furnace gives hope that steel making could be restarted.’
She said she was working with the council to set up a ‘task force to help support workers and the local economy’.
