The leading steel-makers of the country have urged the government to restrict the entry of imported steel to only a few ports and also impose a minimum import price (MIP), Ravi Uppal, CEO and MD, JSPL, told ISMW.
“We have told the government that imports must be controlled through one or two ports in India. There are 25 ports and for every port through which they bring (consignments), our customs people are not fully educated on how to implement the quality order. So importers take advantage of it,” Uppal said.
He was referring to the recent move by the government to introduce new quality norms for steel imports. As per the norms, all products coming to India have to follow the Indian BIS standard.
He further said, “We have told the government to implement the minimum import price or MIP.”
