The Centre has created a corpus of Rs.200 crore to fund the activities of Steel Research Technology Mission of India (SRTMI) and promote research in the iron and steel sectors S.S. Mohanty, president of Indian Institute of Metals and Director (Technical) of the Steel Authority of India has said.
Addressing a national seminar on “Processing and Applications of Advanced Metallic Materials” here on Thursday, Mr. Mohanty said that the Union government had contributed Rs.100 crore for the corpus, while the rest was contributed by steel manufacturing companies. The SRTMI would function from Delhi in the next few months.
Referring to import of advanced materials to meet the requirements of the defence sector, he said the time has come for achieving a zero-dependence on imports from other countries.
For the first time, the entire steel requirement of 40,000 tonnes for indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant was being produced in the country by the SAIL and other Indian companies. Chairman and MD, MIDHANI Ltd, M. Mahayana Rae, said that the MIDHANI and Bhadravati Steel Plant had proposed to work together to synergise their strengths.
