November 5: Indian Railways transported 56.34 million tons (mt) of iron ore for exports, to steel plants and for other domestic use during H1 (April-September) of 2015-16, down 1.80% from 57.37 mt handled during H1 of 2014-15, according to information available with ISMW.
Also Railways’ revenue earnings from iron ore traffic is Rs 3,351 crore in H1 of 2015-16, down 14.16% compared to Rs 3,903.57 crore during H1 of 2014-15.
However, compared to last year, transportation of iron ore for exports, to steel plants and for other domestic use was 9.44 mt in September 2015, up 11.32% from 8.48 mt in September 2014. However, revenues from iron ore transportation went down 5.25% to Rs 535.04 crore in September 2015 compared to Rs 564.70 crore in the same month last year.
Meanwhile, Indian Railways transported 20.96 mt of pig iron and finished steel during H1 (April-September) of 2015-16, up 5.97% from 19.78 mt handled during H1 of 2014-15. Also Railways’ revenue earnings from pig iron and finished steel traffic is Rs 3,283.68 crore in H1 of 2015-16, up 5.97% compared to Rs 2,992.42 crore during H1 of 2014-15.
However, compared to last year, transportation of pig iron and finished steel was 3.31 mt in September 2015, down 1.78% from 3.37 mt in September 2014. Revenues from pig iron and finished steel transportation also moved up 1.201% to Rs 498.70 crore in September 2015 compared to Rs 488.94 crore in the same month last year.
On the other hand, Indian Railways (IR) transported 267 (mt) of coal during H1 of 2015-16, up 3.67% from 257.54 mt handled during H1 of 2014-15. Also Railways’ revenue earnings from commodity-wise freight traffic is up in H1 of 2015-16 by 10.56% compared to that of during H1 of 2014-15.
Therefore, revenue earnings of Railways from transportation of coal during H1 of 2015-16 rose 14.83% to Rs 24,347.71 crore from Rs 21,203.26 crore in H1 of 2014-15.
Compared to last year, transportation of coal was 42.99 mt in September 2015, up 1.27% from 42.45 mt in September2014. Revenues from coal transportation also moved up 3.41% to Rs 3639.50 crore in September 2015 compared to Rs 3,519.49 crore in the same month last year.
Overall, Railways’ revenue earnings from commodity-wise freight traffic rose year-on-year in September 2015 to Rs 8,234.47 crore, up 6.89% compared to Rs 7,703.84 crore earned in September 2014.
Revenues from transportation of cement in September 2015 stood at Rs 646.05 crore (8.32 mt) compared to Rs 690.04 crore (8.98 mt) of September 2014, while that from foodgrains transportation was down to Rs 558.72 crore (3.69 mt) from Rs 624.78 crore (4.41 mt) in September 2014.
Railways’ revenues from transportation of fertilisers in September 2015 were sharply up to Rs 654.29 crore (5.12 mt) from Rs 403.75 crore (4.03 mt) in September 2014.
Revenues from transportation of petroleum oil and lubricants (POL) in September 2015 stood at 427.48 crore (3.45 mt) compared to Rs 365.90 crore (3.19 mt) in September 2014.
Revenues from container services were at Rs 473.60 crore (3.95 mt) in September. 2015 compared to Rs 385.18 crore (4.23 mt) in September 2014 and from transportation of other goods at Rs 614.11 crore (6.53 mt) in September 2015 compared to Rs 504.53 crore (5.91 mt) in September 2014.
