In January 2016, the volume of steel imports went down 21.37% to 24,584 tons against 31,268 tons in December 2015, as provisional information available with ISMW shows. Volumes have been swinging wildly as the chart below indicates.
Imports in the first 10 months (April to January) of the current fiscal of 2015-16 were at 91,350 tons against a mere 115 tons seen in the same period of the previous fiscal. Imports of the material in January 2015 were at nil.
Imports of the commodity have been scant throughout the last financial year of 2014-15 with the total being at a mere 115 tons.

In January 2016, the entire volume comprised “other products” and arrived from Japan at an average price of Rs 20,260- per ton.
December 2015 imports included 10,787 tons of long products which arrived from Singapore at an average price of Rs 28,928 per ton and 20,481 tons of plates and slabs at an average price of Rs 20,804 per ton from Indonesia.
