JSPL is aiming to emerge as the fourth largest producer of steel in India by increasing its production capacity to 12 million tons (mt) within the next one-and-a-half years, company CEO and MD Ravi Uppal told ISMW.
“First, we want to come out of this crisis of demand and low prices in steel. Once we come to normalcy (hopefully) in the next 3-6 months, our total steel production capacity in India in the next one-and-a-half years or so will basically rise to about 10 mt,” Uppal said.
“We have 3.6 mt capacity in Raigarh and our capacity in Angul will be 6.5 mt. Thus, we will have 10 mt capacity in the domestic market and another 2 mt capacity in Oman. So, our total capacity will be 12 mt and that will make us the fourth largest producer of steel in India,” he elaborated.
What will make JSPL stand out is that the company, other than having a presence in steel, is also engaged in mining, minerals and power. “So, we are pretty self-sufficient when it comes to other inputs. It’s just that we want the market to revive and raw material security to be restored,” he added.
