India’s 12 major ports registered a 6.20% increase in cargo traffic handling in the first quarter (Q1) (April –June) of 2016-17 over Q1 of 2015-16, according to data released by the Indian Ports Association (IPA).
The 12 major ports handled 159.02 million tons (mt) of total traffic during April-May, 2016 as compared to 149.74 mt traffic in April-June 2015, the data showed.
Movement of iron ore through the major ports showed a significant jump of 416.10% in Q1, 2016-17. The major ports together handled 9.61 mt of iron ore in Q1 0f FY17, compared to 1.86 mt handled in Q1 of FY16.
On the other hand, movement of iron ore through major ports dropped 44.50% to 2.137 mt in June 2016, from 3.908 mt handled in the previous month.
Marmagoa Port handled the highest volume of iron ore, at 3.93 mt, in Q1 of FY17. This volume, however, was much higher than the iron ore traffic moved through the port in the same period last year.
However, Visakhapatnam Port handled the highest quantity of iron ore (0.80 mt) in the month of June, 2016 followed by Paradip (0.50 mt), Mumbai (0.41 mt) and Marmagoa
(0.41 mt).
Coking coal handling by the major ports stood at 13.04 mt in Q1 of FY17, down 3.14% compared to 13.47 mt handled in the same period of FY16.
Movement of coking coal through these ports stood at 4.31 mt, down 21.37% in June 2016, compared to 5.49 mt in May 2016.
