India's non-alloy flat steel imports surged 38.2% in April-March, 2015-16, despite the measures taken by the government to check cheap inbound shipments, latest steel ministry data showed.
Non-alloy flat steel imports were at 8.06 million tons as in April-March, 2015-16 as against 5.83 million tons in April-February, 2014-15, the data showed.
Imports of HR coils rose 69.5% to 3.4 million tons during the period, while imports of plates rose 44.8% to 1.05 million tons during April-March, 2015-16.
GP/GC sheet imports rose 32% to 586,200 tons, while CR coil/sheet imports rose 30.4% to 2.23 million tons during the period.
