Faced with mounting raw material shortage and other factors affecting sustainability, steel industry leaders have sought an urgent appointment with Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to apprise him of the challenges plaguing the industry in the State.
Industry leaders under Indian Steel Association (ISA) had also earlier sought to meet the Chief Minister in May this year but had to be content with a meeting with Chief Secretary GC Pati on June 4.
The delegation had requested the Government to take measures for enhanced availability of raw materials for the industries by maximising production while calling for ensuring availability of coal blocks for end-use steel plants, rationalisation of rate of royalty for iron ore fines and lumps and lowering contribution demand for the District Mineral Fund (DMF).
Though the Chief Secretary was quite empathetic to the issues, the results are not being reflected on the ground. Steel producers are facing huge challenges in terms of current recession in the steel industry and sourcing of key raw materials at competitive rate, an ISA spokesperson said.
The ISA has once again written to the Chief Minister seeking his appointment so that a delegation of industry leaders like MD Tata Steel TV Narendran, Chairman Jindal Steel and Power Ltd Naveen Jindal, MD Essar Steel Prashant Ruia and others can brief him on the situation.
They have stated that due to various factors, production cost in Odisha has gone up to `28,000 per tonne of finished steel products against the imported steel dumped by China in the Indian market at `22,000 per tonne.
