The automobile industry produced a total 19,841,097 vehicles, including passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, three- and two-wheelers in April 2015-January 2016 as against 19,636,580 in April 2014-January 2015, registering a marginal growth of 1.04% over the same period last year, according to figures released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.
Domestic sales: Sales of passenger vehicles grew by 8.13% in April 2015-January, 2016 over the same period last year. Within passenger vehicles, passenger cars, utility vehicles and vans grew 10.18%, 3.20% and 1.86% respectively during April 2015-January 2016 over the same period last year.
The overall commercial vehicles segment registered a growth of 9.43% in the period under review compared to the same period last year. Medium & heavy commercial vehicles (M&HCVs) registered a growth at 30.19% while light commercial vehicles declined by (-) 2.52% during April 2015-January 2016 over the same period last year.
Three-wheelers sales declined by (-) 2.94% in April 2015-January 2016 over the same period last year. Passenger carrier & goods carrier sales declined by (-) 2.37% & (-) 5.50% respectively in this period over April 2014-January 2015.
Two-wheelers sales registered a marginal growth at 1.35% during the period over April-January, 2015. Within the two-wheeler segment, scooters grew by 11.01% while motorcycles and mopeds dropped by (-) 2.18% and (-) 5.02% respectively in April-January 2016 over April-January 2015.
Exports
In April 2015-January 2016, overall automobile exports grew by 1.61%. Passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, three-wheelers and two-wheelers registered a growth of 1.32%, 18.36%, 3.03% respectively.
